New Spaced Repetition System

We’re thrilled to announce a significant update to Translate Flashcards—a new spaced repetition system designed to make your study sessions even more effective. This update includes several enhancements such as adjustable mastery levels, a choice between 2-button and 3-button response settings with integrated level changes, and an intelligent Review Mode. Let’s dive into these new features.

Mastery Levels

Our new system features progressive study intervals that you can customize to fit your learning needs. Mastery levels allow you to control the pace of your reviews, ensuring each flashcard is presented at an optimal frequency to boost memory retention and recall.

A phrase will not be assigned a level until it is reviewed at least once. To adjust the Mastery Level settings, simply click on the ‘Settings’ (gear icon) in the upper right corner of the application, and then navigate to the ‘Levels’ tab.

Response Button Settings

To cater to different learning styles and preferences, we’ve introduced an option to choose between a 2-button and a 3-button response system during flashcard sessions. In both cases, the application automatically updates the mastery level of each card based on your response:

  • 2 Buttons (Incorrect / Correct): This straightforward option lets you mark each flashcard as ‘Incorrect’ or ‘Correct’. A correct response advances the card to the next mastery level, while an incorrect one lowers it, so you can review it more frequently.
  • 3 Buttons (Incorrect / Difficult / Easy): This option introduces a ‘Difficult’ button between ‘Incorrect’ and ‘Easy’, allowing you to maintain a card at its current mastery level rather than move it up or down.

To access the Response Button settings, click on the ‘Settings’ (gear icon) in the upper right corner of the application, and then navigate to the ‘Buttons’ tab.

Review Mode

Alongside our new spaced repetition system, we’ve introduced a streamlined Review Mode. This new view simplifies the phrase selection process by intelligently prioritizing flashcards based on their mastery level, the date since last review, and the date saved. Review Mode enables you to focus more on studying and less on managing cards, presenting phrases at intervals you set and allowing you to integrate new phrases as you advance.

The magic of Review Mode is available in Advanced Mode now as well. Choose the ‘Review Order’ sort option to order phrases in the same manner as Review Mode. The new ‘Review Status’ and ‘Mastery Level’ filters allow you to further refine the phrases you wish to see by their mastery status.

Other Changes in This Release

  • The limit field has moved. In Advanced Mode, the ‘Maximum number of phrases’ box is now the ‘Set Card Limit’ button down in the right hand corner of the app.
  • New column settings. You can now select and rearrange the columns of the Advanced Mode table in Settings (gear icon) > Columns.

These new features will make spaced repetition easy, allowing you to focus more on learning and less on planning, for more efficient and effective flashcard sessions. We encourage you to try out the new features and send us your feedback. Special thanks to Saeed, whose helpful review inspired these new additions!
